TENNIS ace Bishop Mosehle beat the United States-based Lebelo Mosehle 8-5 to walk away M1 600 richer during a two-day winner-takes–all tournament that ended on Friday.
The festive season-themed tournament was held at the national tennis courts in Maseru and organised by senior tennis players with the aim of motivating and inspiring young as well as up-and-coming players.
The tourney featured 12 players who played in a round robin format in which each competitor plays in turn against every other.
On behalf of the organisers, Mahao Matete, said the event was a success and expressed the intention to hold the event on an annual basis.
“This was the first time we hosted a tourney of this kind, and it was a success because at the end everyone was happy and there were no complaints from all the 12 players who participated,” he said.
“This tournament was actually meant to inspire and motivate these young and upcoming players by giving them a chance to watch people whom they idolise.”
Matete indicated that the tournament was also meant to keep the youngsters occupied to avoid the mischief associated with the festive period.
“We don’t have that many tournaments for senior players in the country, so this event served to address that problem and to also keep people away from the streets at this time of the year.”
He expressed hope that the tournament would grow in leaps and bounds in the coming years and feature both locally- and foreign-based players.
“This year, Lebelo who is based in the United States of America and me from South Africa came. We still have other players outside the country and we hope they will also join us when we do this again next year because our intention is to make it bigger and better,” added Matete.
