IN a remarkable turn of events, Moradi Crushers has taken significant steps to strengthen its relationship with the Ha Mpeke community by addressing their grievances, particularly concerning electricity connectivity.

This newfound partnership marks a transformative journey over the past three years, as both parties have moved from conflict to collaboration.

With the new shared vision, Moradi Crushers and the Ha Mpeke community are optimistic that their cooperation will foster unity and progress for all involved.

A celebratory ceremony was held over the weekend in Ha Mpeke to mark the start of a new relationship.

Moradi Crushers Community Liaison Manager, Bataung Likate, reflected on the evolution of this relationship, stating, “Three years ago, it was unfathomable that we would find ourselves sitting together, enjoying a leisurely braai”.

Acknowledging previous communication challenges, Mr Likate emphasized the strides made toward reconciliation.

“Today, we have set aside our differences and discovered common ground,” he said, highlighting the positive and collaborative spirit now defining their interactions.

As part of their renewed commitment, Mr Likate urged collaborative efforts to rehabilitate grazing pastures for Ha Mpeke’s livestock. He credited the Deputy Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources, Seboka Thamae, for his exceptional mediation skills in bridging the gap between Moradi Crushers and the Ha Mpeke community.

“It is largely due to his (Thamae) efforts that we are now able to work together,” he stated, expressing gratitude for the support that has fostered this new relationship.

Looking ahead, Mr Likate expressed optimism about the continued growth of this partnership.

“We expect this relationship to grow in leaps and bounds as we all focus on building our beloved country.”

He also acknowledged the contributions of senior members of the Mpeke Community Association, particularly Tankiso Ramoabi and Thabang Mokhathali, for their mature approach and dedication during meetings.

“I have personally learned a lot from both gentlemen,” he said.

This positive development follows a two-month deadline set by the Chairperson of the Natural Resource Cluster Portfolio Committee, Moeketsi Motšoane, for Moradi Crushers to address grievances raised by the Ha Mpeke community. The community has voiced concerns over the company’s adherence to environmental regulations, warning that non-compliance could jeopardize its environmental clearance.

Residents have reported significant environmental impacts since Moradi Crushers’ establishment, including depleted water wells due to water taps within the company’s premises, destruction of grazing pastures by mineral waste, and structural damage to their homes. As a result, the community has called for compensation for the ruined pasture, environmental damage, and their cracked houses.

Deputy Chairperson of the Mpeke Community Association, Sakia Ramoabi, expressed his satisfaction with recent management changes at Moradi Crushers.

“This is the first time I have seen him (Likate) this happy, and the way he welcomed us truly touched me,” he said, emphasizing the importance of mutual change.

“I believe we can now cross the bridge into a new chapter together.”

Nelly Ramaqabe, an account assistant at Moradi Crushers, shared her perspective on the ongoing efforts to foster goodwill. She reaffirmed the company’s commitment to pay for electrification for the Ha Mpeke community.

Moradi’s General Manager, Seun Cavaleiro, also highlighted the strategic advantages of the company’s location, stating,

“We found this stone (quarry) here, so we decided to set up operations in this area. It’s quiet and beautiful, and we are proud to employ residents from Ha Mpeke, Ha Ralikariki, and other nearby villages.”

With open dialogue and a commitment to collaboration, Moradi Crushers and the Mpeke community are paving the way for a future built on mutual understanding, respect, and shared growth.
