MASERU — A charity show meant to raise funds for disadvantaged members of the Mazenod community failed to take-off due to incessant rains that pounded Maseru on New Year’s Eve.
The Swallows Car Wash Charity Show — scheduled for Swallows Car Wash in Mazenod on December 31 ― had to be cancelled at the eleventh hour, forcing organisers to refund revellers who had turned-up for the event.
Proceeds from the gig were meant to go towards buying groceries, clothing and other basics for orphans and the needy registered with a local charity organisation, the Paki Support Group.
Event co-ordinator, Thabo ‘Moscow’ Likoti told the Weekender on Tuesday the show had been postponed indefinitely.
“We were forced to postpone the show after heavy rains started pouring down at around 10pm,” Likoti said.
“There was no way we could continue because the show was being held at an open space.”
Likoti said they could not risk losing their equipment, which had already been soaked despite efforts to protect it from the torrential rains.
“The rain had already drenched our system, so we feared the equipment would be completely destroyed if we continued with the show,” Likoti said.
Likoti said the good turnout for the charity show had been encouraging.
“We had to turn away the fans after reaching the decision not to continue with the show,” Moscow said.
“We had to refund those who had already bought tickets and others who had paid at the gate.”
