Matekane urges wool, mohair farmers to increase production

PRIME MINISTER Sam Matekane has called on wool and mohair farmers to ramp up production as part of efforts to strengthen Lesotho’s struggling economy.

Speaking at the launch of a new Lesotho Post Bank (LPB) branch in Mokhotlong recently, Mr Matekane emphasized the government’s unwavering support for the growth of the wool and mohair industry.

He underscored the significance of bringing banking services closer to rural communities, especially those active in wool and mohair farming.

“This bank is here to serve you and offers products tailored to your needs,” Mr Matekane said.

He noted that the new branch opened at a time when government initiatives like the Smallholder Agriculture Development Project (SADP), the Agriculture Productivity Programme for Southern Africa (APPSA), and the Wool and Mohair Promotion Project (WOMPP) were underway to boost the sector.

Mr Matekane urged LPB to collaborate closely with local farmers to help their businesses thrive.

He reaffirmed the government’s pledge not to interfere in wool and mohair affairs, instead promising to create an even playing field for all and provide necessary support.

“We will support your businesses so you can reach your goals,” he assured.

Acknowledging the tough economic climate, partly caused by global trade disruptions, Mr Matekane said the government was seeking new markets and opportunities to protect jobs and increase self-sufficiency.

He stressed the importance of improving livestock production, conserving pastures, upgrading school water and sanitation facilities, enhancing resource centres, and expanding electricity access through projects like Mission 300, supported by the World Bank.

Mr Matekane also reiterated his administration’s commitment to investing in agriculture, infrastructure, education, and social welfare.

He recognized the urgent need to repair deteriorating roads in Mokhotlong, describing roads as vital for trade and service delivery.

“We know the era of relying on foreign aid is ending. It’s time for us to join hands and build our economy together,” he said.
