MOKHOTLONG — A 28-year-old man from Letšeng in Mokhotlong was sentenced to six years in prison for illegal possession of diamonds on July 11.

Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha said Letšeng police were tipped off by Mofolong villagers that Nyali Ramoloko was in possession of three diamonds.

“The suspect told the Mokhotlong magistrate that he bought the diamonds from a male South African,” Masupha said.

Masupha said the diamonds weighed 0.35, 0.30 and 0.75 carats.

“The suspect was sentenced to six years in jail or pay fine of M7 000,” said.

“He could not pay the fine of M7 000 and he was sentenced to six years in prison.”

In a separate case, five men were arrested for robbing a 59-year-old man in Ha Rampenyane in Mafeteng on July 13.

According to a police report three of the robbers barged into the man’s house and demanded money.

The other two were waiting outside.

“The suspects fired a shot into the air and asked the victim to give them some money,” Masupha said.

Masupha said after the gun shot the victim’s sons who were sleeping in other rooms woke up.

They went to their father’s room to rescue him and when they arrived the robbers had fled.

The sons managed to catch the five robbers and handed them over to police.

The suspects handed over 0.38 special firearm to the police and remain in custody while they await trial.

In Maseru two women aged 25 and 42 from Fokothi were charged with concealment of birth on July 13.

Masupha said a premature baby was found wrapped with some towel in the streets.

“A 25-year-old woman was arrested as the suspect,” Masupha said.

“The 25-year-old woman told the police that she was helped by a 42-year-old woman to get rid of the pregnancy,” he said.

Both women were sentenced to five months imprisonment without an option of a fine.
