MASERU — A 21-year-old Malawian national is in police custody after he was caught trying to secure a Lesotho passport using false identity papers, the police have said.

The man was arrested following a tip-off to the police that there was a foreigner who was in the queue who was trying to apply for a Lesotho passport.

“The man had all the necessary and legal documents that a person needs while to apply for a passport,” Masupha Masupha, the police spokesman, said.

The suspect who lives in Ha Mofoka also had Sesotho names in his documents. The suspect was detained by the police on June 3.

Police investigations are continuing.

In Ha Makhoathi, a 35-year-old man was beaten to death for allegedly stealing two cows.

The man’s two accomplices survived the attack.

Masupha said the police received a tip-off that there were three men driving a Nissan van who were carrying two cow carcasses.

“When the police arrived at the scene the community had already beaten the three suspects badly,” Masupha said.

He said the three were later taken to Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Maseru.

“On arrival at Queen II the 35-year- old man was declared dead by the doctor.

“The body of the 35-year-old man was found with six bullet wounds. The two other men are still in hospital,” he said.
