PRIME Minister Moeketsi Majoro yesterday launched a Covid-19 relief for persons aged 60 to 69 years in Matlakeng, Leribe.
The scheme will see elderly people aged 60 to 69 years who are known to be vulnerable getting M820 monthly for the next three months starting this month.
Dr Majoro’s spokesperson, Mosito Moqhekoana said the programme will assist about 35 000 older persons across the country.
To access the funds, vulnerable people who fall within the age group must register with their community leaders.
“We know that due to Covid-19 most people lost jobs and some have become vulnerable,” Mr Moqhekoana said.
“Older persons are the most vulnerable. The people who will benefit from this programme are not eligible for the old age pensions which are given to people aged 70 and above.
“The target is people who do not have sustainable means to provide for themselves.”
The project will be overseen by the Ministry of Social Development.
Dr Majoro also pledged 3000 bags of maize meal to be donated to the elderly who are worst affected by Covid-19.
“Dr Majoro also announced that the government has set aside M15 million to purchase maize meal and beans from local farmers. These will also be donated to selected beneficiaries,” Mr Moqhekoana said.
