MASERU — A Chinese businessman lost over M3 million worth of goods worth M100 000 in cash when his supermarket caught fire in Mafeteng last Friday.
Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha confirmed the incident and said police were investigating.
“A 25-year-old businessman in Mafeteng reported to police that his supermarket caught fire and cash and goods which were in the shop were alsoburnt,” Masupha said.
The businessman told the police that when he arrived on Friday morning he realised that an electric cable had caught fire.
He reportedly tried to extinguish the fire by disconnecting the cable but it was too late as the fire rapidly spread to other sections of the shop.
Police are investigating the case.
Meanwhile, a 26-year-old mentally ill woman from Mafeteng was allegedly sexually assaulted last week.
According to a police report, a 27-year-old man went to the victim’s home after her sister left the house.
The sister had gone to the shops and when she came back she saw someone hurriedly leaving the house.
Police said the sister managed to recognise the suspect.
When the woman returned to the house she noticed that her mentally ill sister had been sexually assaulted.
She told neighbours who went around looking for the suspect.
The villagers later apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.
He was expected to appear in court this week to face charges of rape.
