MASERU — Local TV personality Phakiso Mokhatla, better known as DJ Phakzino, has recruited 12 aspiring female musicians for his Deep Soul project that was launched in January this year.

DJ Phakzino, who presents the hip-hop programme Urban Jamz on Lesotho TV, says his House Shakedown Entertainment company has already recorded a 12-track album featuring the chosen dozen.

“I have already recorded Black Diamond, Chubby and Banana as well as Palycetra, ‘Mapule, Nomsa, Dee, Tlhoks, ‘Maphoka, Rethabile, Deekay and Mexxy,” he told the Weekender.

DJ Phakzino said the album’s release was slated for November.

“Deep Soul was launched on January 7 with the primary aim of getting more local female actively involved in the music industry,” he said.

“It is exclusively for aspiring female musicians and the idea came after realising so much talent was going to waste because of lack of support for such artists.”

DJ Phakzino said proceeds from the sales of the CD and shows would go towards the aspiring artists.

“This project creates a platform for females in the music and entertainment industry at large while proving to the public that female artists can sustain and make it in the industry as well,” he said.

He said many young women had wanted to join the project but he could only take 12 on board.

“It was on a first-come-first-served basis and fortunately the first 12 to come had real talent and I was happy to work with them,” he said.
