Local artists to promote Basotho culture in China

MASERU — Twenty local artists including Afro-jazz star Fatere will represent Lesotho during China’s National Day celebrations in October.

Famo veteran Puseletso Seema, Rabotso and Lehlohonolo will form a famo collaboration for the tour.

Lesotho Haeso Music Award winners Mthibo, Khahliso Mphephoka, Bara ba Manka le Phallang and Katiso Mosoeunyane are also set for the China trip.

The National Day, celebrated on October 1 to mark the formation of the People’s Republic of China, this year comes at a time the country is hosting the Shanghai World Expo.

The world’s biggest trade exhibition started on May 1 and will end on October 31.

Lesotho is one of 190 countries at the expo.

The local China Expo steering committee — including representatives from the ministries of tourism, trade and communications — is pulling all stops to market not only Lesotho’s investment opportunities but cultural and tourism attractions as well.

Moliehi Ntene, the senior arts and crafts officer with the Ministry of Tourism, told the Weekender the local artists will be in China for seven days.

She said the ministry had selected the artists, including a traditional performing group, to reflect Lesotho’s cultural and musical diversity.

“We have three different groups of art and talent representatives to tour China,” Ntene said.

“Three famo leaders from three different famo groups in the country were selected to form a group that would represent famo as a unique musical aspect.

“The music award winners will be taken along because it is our responsibility as the cultural department in the ministry to promote our talent internationally.”
