THE Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) has equipped its public relations (PR) third-year students with skills to build resilience in navigating the cyber world and operating in the media.

The event, themed “Utilising social media for effective PR and media success,” focused on equipping students with essential skills and knowledge for careers in the media.

It was held yesterday at the LUCT campus in Maseru.

It provided LUCT students with valuable knowledge about the benefits and risks of social media and stressed the importance of using it responsibly in today’s interconnected world.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Advocate Tefo Macheli, said the institution was dedicated to preparing students for the digital age.

“As Limkokwing, we are proud to be a 21st-century driven institution that prioritises innovation, creativity, and technology,” Adv Macheli said,

“Such dialogues are part of the university’s mission to stay abreast of modern advancements in technology and communication.”

He underscored the importance of staying current with industry trends, explaining that the university often collaborates with professionals to bring relevant insights to students.

Public relations expert, Sithetho Mzimkhulu, presented on the evolving role of social media in PR, noting that platforms have transformed the field from mere information dissemination to fostering interactive dialogue.

“Many people now spend over nine hours a day on social media,” he said, cautioning students to maintain a healthy balance.

“While social media can be a powerful career tool, it is crucial not to become overwhelmed by it.”

Detective Police Constable Maratintsi Mothebesoane from the Lesotho Mounted Police Service’s Cyber Crime Unit shared insights on the potential dangers of online activity.

With over 1.1 billion Basotho actively online, he highlighted the risks of cybercrime, including the prevalence of fake Facebook accounts leading to harassment and threats. He urged students to be mindful of the information they share publicly, as cybercriminals often exploit personal details for malicious purposes.
