MASERU — Likuena lost 3-1 to Mozambique in a friendly international played in Maputo yesterday.

The match was Lesotho’s first defeat of the year following three draws — twice against Swaziland and once against Botswana — in recent months.

According to reports from Maputo, Lesotho’s solitary goal was scored by Lioli defender Thabo Masualle.

Likuena have gone for a year without tasting the sweetness of victory – their last win coming on July 24 last year.

However, national coach Zavisa Milosavljevic can be encouraged by his side’s tally of three goals in three away games.

The Serbian’s next major challenge is the COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup in October.

The 2009 edition of the southern Africa showpiece has been rescued after Zimbabwe stepped in as host.

The regional championship had been left in limbo after Mpumalanga’s provincial government in South Africa withdrew its sponsorship last month.

The tournament seems to have lost its appeal when Castle did not renew its 10-year sponsorship which ended in 2007.

Likuena’s best result in the COSAFA event came in 2000 when they reached the final and lost to Zimbabwe.
