A team of Chinese medical specialists offered free medical consultations and health screenings to community members from over ten villages within the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) Phase II area from 22 to 23 May.
The team included specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, acupuncture, anaesthesiology, and radiology.
The medical outreach was undertaken in collaboration with the Polihali Transfer Tunnel and Polihali Dam contractors as part of their social responsibility initiatives.
Patients with chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and fibroids received much-needed care.
The outreach was particularly impactful for residents of hard-to-reach areas who typically lack access to specialised medical services.
Mrs. ‘Mamoloja Polihali, Chief of Ha Ramonakalali and Likhameng and chief Mr Abia Leuta expressed their gratitude to the Polihali Dam contractor, Sun JV, for bringing health services to remote communities.
They highlighted that the contractor had also provided transportation for patients to the clinic and distributed food parcels to address dietary needs.
The medical outreach was part of the 18th batch of the China Medical Team’s efforts in Lesotho.
According to the team’s interpreter, Mr. Daniel Chen, and team captain, Dr. Lorin Zhang, the team is based at Motebang Hospital in Leribe and regularly engages in medical outreach to remote rural areas.
The China Medical Team, in partnership with the Lesotho Ministry of Health, has provided health services in Lesotho for 27 years, demonstrating a steadfast collaboration and cordial relations between Lesotho and China. Their ongoing efforts indicate a commitment to ensure that even the most remote communities have access to essential healthcare.
The medical outreach is one of the ways in which Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is contributing to tangible, positive change, and to improving health outcomes in the project area.
By providing essential medical services to underserved areas, the LHDA through its partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Chinese medical team is making significant strides in improving the health and well-being of Project communities.
