WE want to congratulate Vodacom Lesotho for unveiling a whopping M1 million sponsorship deal for a local football tournament.
The telecommunications giant on Tuesday said it had injected M1 million into the Vodacom Spectacular tournament, up from M400 000 last year.
However, we think more can still be done to improve the state of the local game. Our football has generally lagged behind our neighbours.
Our national football team, Likuena, continues to be the whipping boys on the African continent. Local clubs have not done better either.
We think the biggest service local companies can do is to invest in infrastructure and ensure that our stadiums are up to scratch.
The “potato fields” which local teams are being forced to use are an embarrassment.
Apart from Setsoto Stadium most of our stadiums do not meet international standards.
The government must, through its Ministry of Sport, chip in and assist in the construction of proper stadiums for our local clubs.
