THABA-TSEKA — Two women from Thaba-Tseka were on Monday sentenced to three months in jail or pay a fine of M300 after they were convicted of carrying out an illegal abortion.
The Thaba-Tseka magistrates’ court heard some neighbours rushed to ‘Mapotlako Paulo’s home after they heard someone screaming on March 15.
When they got to the house they found ‘Matelekiso Khauta, 36, who confessed that she had helped Paulo to abort her three-month old foetus.
Paulo pleaded for a lenient sentence from the court. She said she was a single mother who was struggling to look after her two children.
Her fellow suspect, ‘Matelekiso, also pleaded for a lenient sentence saying she was a first offender.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Monyake Hlabanyane, said life of the unborn was precious and needed to be safeguarded.
The two women were charged with concealment of birth. — Lena.
