MASERU — Central Bank of Lesotho (CBL) governor Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane has bemoaned the quality of business reporting in Lesotho.
Matlanyane was speaking at a ceremony to hand over books to journalists to help them improve their standard of English and reporting on economics.
The books, The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage and Style Guide, 10th edition of the bestselling guide to English Usage, are meant to help journalists improve their writing skills.
Speaking at the function last Wednesday, Matlanyane said too little is being reported on Lesotho’s economy.
“This is to begin a relationship between the CBL and journalists so that we can help you find the needed information to report on economics,” Matlanyane said.
“It is disturbing that not much is being reported on economics.”
The governor said the central bank was keen to continue providing useful resources and information on the Lesotho economy to make work easier for local journalists.
Matlanyane said the CBL has an obligation to report on the state of the economy and that could only be achieved in partnership with the media.
She said that forums would be held frequently for journalists to advise them on what needs to be highlighted.
Speaking on behalf of media institutions, Media Institute of Southern Africa (Lesotho) chairman, Mzimkhulu Sithetho, said it was difficult to report on the country’s economy because there are no reports.
Sithetho urged journalists to take advantage of the resources provided by the CBL to be able to report effectively.
“Reporting on the economy is important for the development of every country.
“Too little is being reported about our economy by our journalists.
“We should understand the basics of economics so that we are able to report in a way that even a layman will understand,” he said.
