…to boost connectivity across the country

TELECOMMUNIACATIONS giant, Econet Telecom Lesotho, has launched a bold new initiative aimed at transforming the country’s digital landscape.
Dubbed the Maseru RAN (Radio Access Network) and Transport Network Upgrades Project, this ambitious rollout is set to dramatically improve mobile and internet services for customers nationwide.
It is being rolled out under the Re le Utloile Campaign, which means Econet has heard the nation’s outcry over network problems.
This network overhaul is part of Econet’s broader transformation strategy, driven by innovation, a deep focus on customer experience, and a commitment to national development.
The project kicked off in February 2025, and the first phase has already been successfully completed. Now, Econet is entering a crucial stage of the upgrade, with major milestones expected between 20 May and 30 July 2025.
While there may be brief service interruptions during this period, the company assures customers that the disruptions will be minimal and well-managed.
“This network transformation is a clear sign of Econet’s commitment to creating a faster, smarter, and more reliable digital future for Lesotho,” said Econet Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Plaatjies.
“We are not just upgrading hardware, but laying the groundwork for real progress and building a stronger foundation for connectivity in the Mountain Kingdom.”
The upgrades will involve replacing outdated radio systems with cutting-edge, high-performance equipment at key sites. At the same time, Econet’s engineers are reinforcing the transport network infrastructure to ensure it can handle growing demand for high-speed, always-on internet access.
“We are taking every precaution to avoid major service disruptions. Business continuity and customer satisfaction remain our top priorities throughout this process.”
He said customers can expect:
- Stronger transport infrastructure – Enhanced capacity in Econet’s core network means faster data transmission, better routing, and support for more advanced digital services across Lesotho.
- Upgraded 4G and 5G capabilities – The improved mobile network will reduce congestion, expand coverage, and provide a better overall experience for voice and data users on both 4G and 5G platforms.
The upgrade is being rolled out in a manner ensuring that each location meets quality standards before moving on to the next.
Mr Plaatjies said their carefully phased approach will help minimise any potential impact on customers during the transition.
“As we move ahead, our customers, partners, and team members are all key players in making this vision a reality. Together, we are building a more connected Lesotho, one that is ready to thrive in the digital age.”
