…whilst driving economic activity

ECONET Telecom Lesotho (ETL) has reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting sports in the country through its long-term sponsorship of schools’ sports.
Over the past three years, the telecommunications giant has significantly impacted the nation’s youth and economy by investing M6 million into the Lesotho Institutions Sports Association (LISA) Games.
This year’s games, held earlier this month at Lesotho High School in Maseru, featured 63 schools from across Lesotho competing in 10 different sports. These included football, netball, basketball, and volleyball.
Speaking to the Lesotho Times this week, Econet’s Acting GM of Marketing Communications & Customer, Puleng ‘Mathabo Masoabi, said the intense three-day event was not just a showcase of young talent but also a catalyst for economic activity and community engagement throughout the country.
“The LISA Games have proven to be more than just a celebration of sportsmanship and athleticism; they have also become an economic engine that benefits various sectors in the country,” said Ms Masoabi.
Ms Masoabi added that during the games, hawkers and small-scale vendors thrived by selling food, beverages, and merchandise to spectators, participants, and organisers.
“This influx of customers provided a much-needed boost to their income, helping them to support their families and contribute to the local economy,” she said.
Additionally, the hiring of the sporting grounds at Lesotho High School for the games injected funds into the institution, ensuring the maintenance and improvement of these facilities for future use. Ms Masoabi said organising the LISA Games also created temporary jobs for match commissioners, referees, and event staff.
“Bus services were hired to transport students to and from the venue, providing work for local drivers, their assistants, and the transport industry in Lesotho,” she added.
The influx of participants and spectators led to increased demand for catering services and accommodation for visiting teams and officials, benefiting local caterers and service providers, she said.
“The awards and cash prizes for outstanding performers have far-reaching impacts, with some prizes being used to cover school fees or other educational expenses. This financial support empowers young athletes to continue their education while pursuing their sports careers.
“Beyond the economic benefits, the LISA Games play a crucial role in elevating Lesotho’s presence in the international sports arena. The winners have just embarked on a journey to Zimbabwe to participate in the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) Ball Games, and we are hopeful that they will represent Lesotho with great pride. Their participation not only brings recognition to the country but also inspires future generations of athletes,” reiterated Ms Masoabi.
She further explained that Econet’s commitment to the LISA Games underscored the company’s broader vision of fostering talent, supporting local economies, and contributing to the nation’s development.
“By investing in youth through sports, Econet is promoting healthy lifestyles and teamwork while paving the way for economic growth and international recognition for Lesotho.
“These games have become a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of sports to bring about positive change. As these young athletes continue to excel both on the field and in their academic pursuits, they carry with them the support of a nation and the backing of a company that believes in their potential.
“The LISA Games are more than just a sporting event; they are a vital part of Lesotho’s socio-economic fabric, made possible through the generous support of Econet Telecom Lesotho. The benefits of this investment will continue to be felt for years to come, as the country’s sports fraternity grows and thrives, bringing together communities and driving economic progress.”
