FOR the fifth consecutive time, DJ Mekonko is set to host a massive music extravaganza to celebrate his birthday.
The bash, lined up for the Khubetsoana-based club 4Fordy, will be headlined by CashTime duo, Vigilante and Kid X from South Africa.
In an interview this week, DJ Mekonko told the Weekender this year’s edition will be better than any he has held so far. He added that the choice of the line-up was in response to revelers’ requests.
“We have always had Deep House celebrations as it is the sound I normally play and love. But this time around, it is not about celebrating me as a House DJ, but doing something for revelers whom I have played for in the past 10 years of my career,” said DJ Mekonko.
“Most of the fans have expressed their preference for a Hip Hop show since it is the trending genre nowadays, hence our choosing of the CashTime duo as the headline act.
“The two have been in Lesotho before but their performance will be totally different this time since they will collaborate on a couple of songs.”
He added that they were pulling out all the stops to ensure the show ranks highly among the best of the winter season.
“The birthday bash has always been held in winter but that has not stopped us from dishing out the best of entertainment,” the birthday-boy said.
“I promise to raise the bar again this year to ensure everyone the time of his or her life. Even if less than 10 people show, they will be served on a silver platter.”
House music lovers, DJ Mekonko said, need not worry as they will be served during the Mekonko Sundays at 4Fordy held every Sunday. He said the upcoming show would serve as the after party.
The Benoni-born Vigilante is among the first Hip Hop deejays in South Africa. His career started in 2007 as the opening act for established artists. The breakthrough came after he featured on such television channels such as Channel O, SABC 1 and etv in which he showcased his disc spinning skills during programme interludes.
Vigilante, real name Tebogo Seema, is currently a Metro FM anchor and the only deejay signed under the CashTime Family stable. He rose to prominence with the track God’s Will which features rappers AKA and KO.
The CashTime artists will share the stage with local headliners; Jiji F, Skebz D, Chocolate Soul, T Mech, Juvy, Untitled-dj, Blayze, AfroDJ, PabloDJ, Queen Mo and dance crew KTA Kings, while Neo-soul and hip hop muso, Mr Maps, will be the MC.
