MASERU — Cricket lovers will have to wait a little longer to know the champions of Lesotho.
The five-team national championship was due to be completed this weekend with a title-deciding clash between Ajax Cricket Club and Lerotholi Polytechnic.
However, the league’s finish will be delayed for at least two weeks because Lerotholi are preparing for inter-college games, the Lesotho Cricket Association (LCA)’s development officer Lekoatsa Chaka said this week.
“We were supposed to be finishing our league at the weekend but Fokothi are preparing for their inter-college games, so the date will have to be around the 20th of March,” Chaka said.
If Ajax win the encounter they will be crowned league champions.
The Teyateyaneng-based club are second behind National University of Lesotho side Vampires on net run rate.
Both teams have 12 points.
Chaka also revealed that the LCA was preparing to have the 2010-11 season start in April.
“We are planning that as early as April we should begin the 2010-2011 cricket campaign,” he said.
Chaka added that next season there will be more teams participating in the league.
This season Fidentia Cricket Club and Leribe Cricket Club did not register for the league, but Chaka said he was hopeful they would this time.
There is also going to be a new team, Limkokwing.
Chaka said they will also focus on development and getting sponsors on board.
The league winners get a paltry M5 000.
“The plan for this year is to be more aggressive in getting sponsorship. So far there hasn’t been a lot of interest,” he said.
“We are also working hard on development.”
