FIVE Chinese couples working for Sinohydro Corporation Limited said their “I dos” on Monday during a colourful collective wedding held at Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village.

The couples, Li Shixiong and Yuanmei, Tang Haichun and Pi Haidi, Wu Yong and Huang Qunhui, Zang Duanyi and Li Chunyan as well as Cheng Hui and He Yumei, met and fell in love during the construction of the Metolong Dam and Raw Water Pump Station.

Sinohydro Corporation Limited was contracted to construct the public works projects which began in 2011 and officially launched last Friday.

While being quintessentially Chinese, the wedding ceremony was infused with elements of western and Sesotho culture. The brides arrived wearing oriental dresses which were later on changed for wedding gowns. On their part, the bridegrooms donned dark suits.

The colour scheme was red, which is always associated with happiness and good fortune in Chinese culture.

Guests were entertained by the Ha Makotoko mokhibo group which put up a lively performance.

Among the guests in attendance was Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili, Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho Hu Dingxian, Water Affairs Minister Ralechate ‘Mokose, the wife of Thaba Bosiu principal chief ‘Malerotholi Khoabane Letsie Theko and Metolong Authority CEO Keith Reynolds who each read out the marriage certificates of one of the five couples.

In his remarks, Dr Mosisili said he wished the couples happiness, wealth and good health, adding that they should bear “plenty” of children.

“It is an honour to witness the matrimony of these beautiful couples. I now realise that there was more to the construction of the dam at Metolong as families were constructed as well,” he said amid howls of laughter.

On behalf of the Sinohydro board, Xiao Huamin who came all the way from the company’s headquarters in China, said the weddings proved that they had a good working environment.

“Seven years ago, we witnessed the inauguration of Metolong Dam, and today we are witnesses of the love that developed during the construction,” he said.

“The project has been a great experience and that is evident with the matrimony of these five couples.”

Huamin added: “We received a warm reception from Basotho which proves the deep and true friendship of Lesotho and the People’s Republic of China.

“We wish the couples happy and joyous lives and long live the friendship of Basotho and Chinese.”
