The first round of the 2015 National Netball League comes to an end on 4 July with the last matches set for Sofia High School in Butha-Buthe.
According to Lesotho Netball Association (LNA) public relations officer Matšepo Mohau, it has been plain-sailing since the season started in May, with 15 female teams battling for the M4000 first prize, while 10 male teams are fighting for the winners’ purse of M2500.
The runners-up in the female category are set to receive M3500 with second-placed male team taking home M1500.
“We launched the season on 23 May with teams from the South, North and Central region playing each other in Maseru and on 13 June, teams from the Central region visited the South and played their matches in Mafeteng. So these are the last matches of the first round when teams from the Central region would be visiting their Northern region counterparts,” Mohau said.
Fans turnout, she added, have been “promising” as the league had been inactive for two years due to lack of funds.
“The turn-up of teams has been really good save for Thaba-Tseka and this was due to bad weather. But all in all, we are satisfied with the positive response from our teams,” she said.
Mohau further noted the LNA would select the senior and under-20 teams next weekend.
“After the weekend games, we will begin the process of selecting the national under-20 and senior teams. The second round of the season would then start in August, with the finals scheduled for October.”
The association’s annual general meeting, she said, is set for 11 July in Maseru.
“A new LNA committee would also be elected at the AGM.”
