Businesswoman robbed

Police are hunting five men who were part of a six-member gang that robbed a Chinese businesswoman in Mokhotlong last Saturday.

The gang allegedly went to the woman’s home and demanded to see her work permit, pretending to be government officials who wanted to establish if she was in the country legally. The woman is said to have refused to open the door for them but the men allegedly proceeded to disarm a guard securing her nearby shop, before taking M25 000, two cellphones and a bank card from the supermarket. The robbers also took the guard’s firearm.

However, the police were alerted of the ongoing robbery and when they came, the suspects fled from the scene.

But one of the men, Moorosi Motsamai (28), was caught and appeared before the Mokhotlong Magistrate’s Court on Monday, according to deputy police spokesperson Lerato Motseki.

“It is alleged that the six men arrived at the Chinese businesswoman’s home and demanded to see her work permit. After she refused to open the door for them, the six men allegedly forcefully took a gun from her security guard, and went on to steal M25 000 in cash, two cellphones and a bankcard from the shop, as well as the guard’s 7.65 mm firearm. One of them who was driving the getaway car, Moorosi Motsamai, was arrested and has since been remanded in custody,” she said.

Motsamai’s alleged accomplices are still on the run and the police are after them, Senior Inspector Motseki said.
