FORTY abandoned corpses will be laid to rest at Botšabelo burial grounds on 7 December 2016 in the presence of Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili and other government officials.

The corpses have being kept at Lesotho Funeral Services (LFS), some for more than three years without being claimed by their next of kin.

The burial ceremony has been made possible by a M35 200 donation by Lesotho National Insurance Group (LNIG) for use in expenses including the purchase of coffins.

Next Wednesday, the burial service will start at 9:00am and end three hours later.

LFS Manager ‘Mamahoana Chokobane recently told a press conference that LNIG chipped in with the donation after relevant government departments had cited budgetary constraints for their failure to assume responsibility for the burial of the corpses, some of which were just dumped at the funeral palour by relatives.

Maseru District Administrator Ntšala Letsoela said they had extended invitations to Dr Mosisili and other government officials since the burials were government’s responsibility.

For his part, LNIG Sales Manager Qamako Mahao said it was only fitting to give back as his company benefited from Basotho in their operations.

“Like every company, we have a social responsibility programme where we give back to the community in different ways. Where there is vulnerability and challenges that is where the programme comes in handy,” Mr Mahao said, adding, they did not hesitate to help out since this was a national crisis.

“Having so many corpses in one district is a big challenge and one could imagine what the situation could be like in other parts of the country when we have such a large number in Maseru.”

He said this showed how endemic poverty had become “among our communities” and it was necessary to assist in such situations.
