MASERU — Maluti Mountain Brewery (MMB) last Friday presented M97 000 to two local institutions for the improvement of water supply services as well as the provision of litter bins in Maseru.

The Water and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) received M72 000 for the water reticulation system and stand up pipes at Qoaling, a village situated on the outskirts of the city.

The project will see about 700 people getting access to clean water.

Villagers in Qoaling have for years been struggling to access clean portable water for domestic use.

The rest of the funds were disbursed to the Maseru City Council for the provision of bins.

The brewery and Wasa have since the 2007/08 financial year been working closely together to provide water to residents of Thetsane.

The programme benefited about 1 000 households.

In 2009, the brewery also provided clean water to over 1 000 households at Lithoteng in Maseru.

Although Lesotho has abundant water resources there are still pockets in both urban and rural areas that are still struggling to access clean drinking water.

The brewery also handed over M25 000 to the Maseru council to increase the number of bins in the city.

MMB said this was the second time that it had provided concrete litter bins to the city council.

“Provision of water to communities within which we conduct business is very high on the Africa strategy for the SABMiller group.

“And we are excited that Wasa continues to partner with us on this important venture,” said MMB managing director Anthony Grendon.

MMB is a subsidiary of SABMiller plc which is the second largest beer company in the world.
