MASERU — The main opposition All Basotho Convention (ABC) party yesterday officially sacked its secretary-general Macaefa Billy.
Billy received his dismissal letter at around 10am yesterday when he arrived at the Lesotho Workers Party (LWP)’s offices from a botched meeting that had been called to discuss the future of the alliance.
The meeting, which was scheduled for the ABC offices at Carlton Centre, failed to take place after the ABC leadership failed to pitch up.
“I found the letter awaiting me at the LWP office,” Billy said.
“I was appalled, not because the ABC leadership no longer wants me, but because they ditched the meeting that was proposed by them only to write me this kind of a letter,” Billy said.
The ABC and LWP’s marriage ended in divorce in July. But there have been efforts to reunite the two parties following pressure from party youths.
ABC leader Thomas Thabane wrote to the LWP on September 7 inviting the party to a meeting to discuss the way forward.
On September 16 the LWP replied suggesting that the meeting should be held yesterday.
The meeting however failed to take off.
An angry Billy said there had been “no apology” from the ABC over their failure to pitch up.
Thabane however insisted the party did not ditch the meeting but there “had been a communication breakdown between our office and the LWP’s”.
“We changed the date (for the meeting) and I believe the letter delayed to reach the LWP’s office,” Thabane said.
“We really want to talk to the LWP.”
Thabane however insisted that they were not going to discuss the alliance.
“We are not going to discuss the alliance. It’s long gone.”
