South African living soccer legend, Benni McCarthy, will be tying the knot on the weekend when he weds Stacey Munro.
The player’s brother Jerome McCarthy, a former Kaizer Chiefs and Santos player himself, confirmed to the Siya crew, “I’ll be leaving for Scotland today (Wednesday) to be there for the wedding.”
The Siya crew gave McCarthy’s agent, Rob Moore, a call who also confirmed he would be making the trip to Scotland for the wedding. Some of his former teammates and colleagues have passed on messages to Benni, with his former Pirates teammate, Lucky Lekgwathi, saying, “I would like to welcome him to the world of marriage. I wish him a successful marriage. Marriage is all about understanding and love for each another. Benni was like a brother to everyone at Pirates.”
“I remember the one game we played against Golden Arrows, it was the last game of the season (2011/12 season). Thabo (Matlaba) miskicked the ball and it hit our post. He went to Thabo and it looked like he wanted to bite him. He even gave him a nickname after that. He called him transformer because of that incident. He said, ‘Mr. Transformer, I will ‘kill’ you. We want to win the league and you want to score own goals. Lucky talk to Thabo, we want to win the league and he wants to score an own goal. It was nice having him around. He is a good guy,” said Lekgwathi.
“Benni has been blessed with a second chance. He has a bright future ahead of him and he must look forward to sharing it with his new bride,” said Shaun Bartlett, while Eric Tinkler simply commented, “All the best to Benni and don’t faint!.”
Former SuperSport United captain, Ricardo Katza also had this say, “I thought he was married already, ha, ha, ha. Anyway, on behalf of all the boys from Cape Town who’ve made it in football, I would like to wish him all the best on his big day. Marriage is all about what you make of it with your wife. I wish him good times ahead and that he and his wife will have a lot of kids.”
Soccer Laduma Editorial Director, Peter Du Toit, also offered a congratulatory message saying, ” Benni you are a top man. We all wish you and your wife a life full of love and good health.”
The Hanover Park-born Benni is still Bafana’s all-time leading goalscorer, and the only SA player to ever bag a UEFA Champions League medal .
Offer your well wishes below for one of Mzansi’s greatest football sons.
