MASERU Warriors will be crowned champions of the rugby Seven Series that ends on Saturday at LCS Rugby Ground.

The competition started in the first week of July this year, with six teams namely, Maseru Warriors, Mabote Beavers, NUL Spears, LCS, Swallows and The Royals.

Swallows and The Royals were eliminated in the last round of the competition leaving Warriors who top the standings with 31 points, followed by Mabote Beavers on 25 five points as well as NUL Spears and LCS who are tied on 18 points.

The Saturday matches will decide who takes third and fourth positions respectively.

According to Federation of Lesotho Rugby secretary general, Litšitso Motšeremeli, the competition was introduced to keep the teams busy during the off-season as the league championship runs from January to May.

“Rugby is still a new sport in this country so we learnt from our past mistakes that we need to have as many competitions as possible especially during the off-season,” Motšeremeli said.

The FRL secretary said the competition would go a long way in improving the standards of the sport in the country. He also said they had another competition, the Treasurer Group Rugby Championship that started last weekend and is also “aimed at providing the much needed action to our teams and players”.

‘The good thing about it is that it has sponsorship and there will be trophies for the winning teams and outstanding individuals at the end of the championship.

“That is good motivation for the teams as they have something to play for and we are also delighted as the association,” he said, adding, such tournaments helped the sport to grow in the country.
