The Lesotho Basketball Association (LBA) is set to host a high school basketball tournament in Maseru this weekend.
The two-day Sprite All Schools Basketball Competition begins on Saturday at Lehakoe Club, Methodist High School and Machabeng College.
According to LBA Public Relations Officer, Ratšolo Molupe, 32 schools are expected to send teams to the tournament. Defending champions, Methodist High, are also part of the tournament, he added.
“We are anticipating two days of good basketball and fierce competition from the 32 schools hoping to be crowned champions come Sunday,” Molupe said.
Molupe also said high school basketball had played a huge role in nurturing young talent for the senior league.
“This has been a good platform for young players to hone their skills in a competitive league,” said Molupe.
“There has been a good relationship between different categories of basketball in this country because of this league which is why the transition has not been that difficult for the players.”
According to Molupe, BBH and LSR would also face-off this weekend in the deciding match of the senior men’s league.
“Just like the schools competition, we expect a thrilling game between these two teams,” said added Molupe.
“This has been a very good year for basketball and competition among the teams continues to improve.
“I also believe collaborating with FIBA (Federation of International Basketball Associations) has also played an important role in the growth of the sport in Lesotho as we managed to hold workshops and trained our coaches through this engagement.”
