15 athletes off to Mozambique

MASERU — Fifteen Basotho athletes were yesterday expected to leave Lesotho for this weekend’s Southern Region Senior Track and Field Events Championships in Maputo, Mozambique.
The athletes include Selloane Tšoaeli and Mosito Lehata who are currently undergoing a two-month intensive training programme in Mauritius.
Lesotho Athletics Amateur Association (LAAA) spokesperson Sejanamane Maphathe told the Lesotho Times the country will use the Maputo meeting to prepare for the World Championships in South Korea from August 27 to September 7.
“They are scheduled to leave Wednesday night (last night) and the trip is financed by the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission,” he said on Tuesday.
“We’ve got 15 athletes including Selloane and Mosito who are going to compete at these games as part of our preparations for the World Championships and All Africa Games.”
The All Africa Games will be held in Maputo from September 3-18.
Maphathe said they were expecting financial difficulties this year “but there is nothing we can do because we want the country to bring more medals from World Championships and All Africa Games”.
“This is why we are spending more money to ensure that all athletes are well prepared and have international exposure ahead of these games,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ramolefi Motsieloa brought a silver medal from the Mauritius Foreign Marathon which was held on Sunday.
“Ramolefi finished second in the 22 km race and brought a trophy and silver medal back home,” Maphathe said.
Temo Ramputo and Moleboheng Mafata finished fourth and fifth respectively while ‘Makapong failed to finish the race because of cramps, Maphathe said.
He said the association is happy with Lesotho’s performance at the Mauritius marathon.
