Khuli Chana claims cops shot him, mistook him for kidnapper

CHANAAward-winning hip-hop star Khuli Chana is recovering at his Midrand home after allegedly being shot at by police this morning.

Chana was shot in the hand in what is believed to be a case of mistaken identity.

The incident happened at about 1am at the Caltex garage on New Road near the N1 highway.

Chana’s manager, Refiloe Ramogase, said the artist was driving to a gig in Pretoria in his light blue BMW 1 series when his DJ asked him to wait for him at the filling station.

“When he was there the DJ phoned him and told him that they would meet at Moloko in Pretoria which was the venue for the gig,” he said.

As he was driving out of the garage onto the highway, he said, an unmarked VW minibus taxi  with about four police officers, blocked his way.

They allegedly pumped bullets into his car as he was driving around it.

“They fired about six shots into his car. One bullet hit  him in the finger. He then lost control of the car and hit an embankment,” he said.

Ramogase said the police pulled Chana out of the car and made him sit on the road for about an hour and ignored his pleas to take him to hospital or call an ambulance.

“It’s only when I arrived there with my lawyer that they allowed him to go to hospital. Basically he was made to sit on the road with no medical attention,” Ramogase said.

He said when they asked them why they shot him, the police, who said they were affiliated with the Bedfordview police station, said that they mistook him for a kidnapper.

Ramogase say they rushed the artist to Sunninghill hospital where he was treated and discharged.

Police were not immediately available for comment.
