FIVE local riders will on Saturday take on 65 others in the 110-kilometre Live Lesotho 400 motorcycle race in Thaba-Bosiu.

The five are Teboho Moretlo, Timello Tšolo, Tobatsi Masiatile, Molamu Morejele and the youngest rider Nkhasi Matete (16).

The race will start at the Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Village and go through Ha-Khoabane, Ha-Matela, Popanyane, Nkoeng, Boinyatso and Ha-Mosalla before returning to the starting point.

Lesotho Off-Road Racing Association spokesperson Keketso Malebo told the Lesotho Times that the preparations for the race are on track and the registrations would close tomorrow.

“We only knew four weeks ago that we would be hosting the race this year but that is not a problem because we have been working hard to ensure that everything is in order,” Malebo said.

“So far, we seem to be on the right track and we are now waiting for Saturday.

“We are expecting about 70 participants at the race and the registration will close on Friday. We will start with the time trial at 8am while the main race will start at 10am where the riders will be doing two loops.”

Malebo said the riders would use the race to gain points which will aid their rankings.

“This is the fourth round of the series of races under Motorcycling South Africa (MSA) which take place in Botswana, South Africa, eSwatini and Lesotho. So, it is important for the riders to gain points in this coming race as those points will determine the overall winner when the season ends.”

He said he was also confident that Lesotho riders would push their competitors to the wire.

“We will have riders from South Africa mostly but I think other countries will still be represented. Of course, we have riders who are capable. They will also have a home advantage. Our attention will be on the youngster (Matete) because he is promising, so we want to see how he will fare,” Malebo said.
