NEWLY-ELECTED Lesotho Women Football Association president Puseletso Mokhosi has vowed to improve the standards of women’s football in the country.

Mokhosi, who replaced Maleshoane Mokhathi after the latter resigned midway through her last term, said the new committee was mulling a tournament that would feature all women’s teams.

“Our main target is to have a competition that will be contested by ladies’ teams across the country. We will also introduce grassroots programmes to help us identify young talent,” Mokhosi said.

“The grassroots stage is very important because that is where we get the young talent especially at primary schools. So we need to give it attention going forward because we have lost a lot of talent already.”

Mokhosi said it was also important to ensure national teams get more international exposure adding they would work closely with the Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) to achieve that.

“We need to make sure our national team gets as many international matches as possible,” she said.

“There is a lot of work that needs to be done in terms of promoting the ladies game in the country.

“The coaching department also requires serious attention and we need to make sure that there is a big pool of women coaches and administrators.

“There is a huge gap between men’s and women’s football in terms of trained administrators so that is another department where we will have to put more effort.”

Mokhosi commended the previous committee for ensuring there were women on the referees’ panel.

She said it would also be a huge challenge to attract corporate sponsorship for the women’s football league that was now in its second year.

“What is left is for us to go out and get the corporate sector to invest in women football as we already have a league that is in its second year,” Mokhosi said.

“The Women Super League is getting stronger and has played a massive role in reviving the sport among women.

“It will ensure we have a big pool to select players for the national teams and we just have to make it more competitive,” she added.
