SOUTH African singer, ItuSings, and local house music duo, Zagro Deejays, kept the audience busy on the dance floor at this year’s edition of the Holimo Gin, Wine and Jazz Festival last weekend at the Afriski Mountain Resort in Mahlasela.

ItuSings had fans eating off the palm of his hand as they sang along to his soulful jams. His set was even made more interesting as he indulged the audience, teaching them the lyrics of every track to ensure they sang along the choruses.

As soon as he put the microphone down, fans were all over him, seeking to know more about his musical career and inspires his sound. The Weekender caught up with him on Saturday evening after his set and he said he would not hesitate to come back to Lesotho.

“This is my first time in Lesotho but I have loved every moment of it, the crowd is so welcoming and their response exceeded my expectations,” ItuSings told the Weekender.

South African singer, Itusings, captured attention of all with his melodic voice and the blanket he wore

“I feel there is yet more that I need to discover about this beautiful country and would love to come back as often as possible. It will also be an honour if I could collaborate with artistes from this side. The Zagro Deejays are on top of their game.”

The Zagro Deejays duo (Allegro and Skizo) took to the stage soon after ItuSings. One could tell from the fact that they only had t-shirts on in the biting cold snow covered area that they were ready for an electrified performance. As soon as DJ Allegro started banging the bongo drums, people were already finding their spots on the dancefloor.

DJ Skizo threw a house banger which blended in well with the drums and everybody got into the groove. At that time, everybody turned into a good dancer as they could not get enough of the good vibe the performers brought to the stage.

Deafening screams followed every time when DJ Allegro took the microphone in-between the set to ask people if they were having a good time.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we go by the name of Zagro Deejays, we are here to make you dance, are you all having a good time?”

The event’s Master of Ceremonies, Mr Maps, also ensured that patrons are kept in the celebratory mood in between the performances by constantly gearing them up for the next act. He also kept them in the loop about upcoming activities.

Other performers of the festival were South African Kith+Kin, Dan Shaw, Eden Michelle and Lesotho’s very own band, Origin.

The closing party on Saturday night went on till around midnight but revellers kept screaming and begging for more.

Holimo Gin, Wine and Jazz Festival was held by Afriski Mountain Resort in collaboration with South African wine boutique, Eighteen13’s.

According to Michelle MacPherson of Afriski Mountain Resort, the event facilitated an intimate environment within which festival goers interacted with a range of lifestyle activations that are currently trending within the context of music, food, health and fitness gatherings around the globe.

MacPherson said the festivities were attended by over 150 people from South Africa and Lesotho.

“The Holimo Wine, Gin and Jazz Festival takes place, every year, 3222m above sea level in the heart of the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho.

“The aspirational event facilitates an intimate environment within which festival goers can interact with a range of lifestyle activations that are currently trending within the context of music, wine, gin and food gatherings around the globe.

“Excitement around this year’s experiential feast of music, adventure, culinary exploits and connoisseur led premium wine and gin showcases has been building all year with the announcement of the Wine partners: Aaldering, Holden Manz, Wilderhurst, Sannierust and Solitary Wines.  Gin partners: Duke gin, Hope on Hopkins and Tragelaphus gin, and Artists: Kith and Kin, Dan Shawn and Eden Michelle, Itusings, Origin band and Zagro Deejays.

“From the first day, the Holimo Wine, Gin and Jazz Festival had an instant sense of community and electric atmosphere. The festival kicked off with Gerhard Holden from Holden Manz Wine Estate treating festival goers to cheese and wine pairings, while listening to catchy acoustic tunes from Kith and Kin.

Dinner was enjoyed by all in Africa’s highest restaurant — Sky, with Dan Shaw & Eden Michelle, Origin and Zagro Deejays keeping guests entertained.

“The highlight of Afriski’s and Eighteen13’s Holimo Wine, Gin and Jazz Festival was the jam-packed schedule for Saturday.  The day kicked off with a wine master class with Eighteen13, a boutique wine shop located in Cedar Square Fourways, supplier and retailer of fine wine.

“The Wine & Gin Tour, a one-of-a-kind activity based tasting, was the main event of the festival, with five different wine stations located across the slopes of Afriski, each with their own exciting activity on offer; from donkey rides, paintball, ‘mieliegat’, Petanque and bumboarding,” MacPherson said.

Cezanne Kouta, the Founder and Managing Director of Eighteen13 said they were grateful for being part of the festival.

“It’s completely different from other wine festivals in that it’s not just about walking up to a stall and sampling wines but that it is completely interactive.

“From the wine and gin master class where attendees are learning valuable information that assists them in their general wine knowledge, to activities that make the festival a complete experience.

“We look forward to the next one and to continue growing. We want to continue providing the people of Lesotho with a world class festival,” Kouta said.
