MASERU — The results for the Standard Seven national examinations are out.

Education Minister ‘Mamphono Khaketla told a press conference yesterday that the results showed a 1.9 percent drop in the number of students who obtained first and second class passes.

Khaketla said the results, which will be available for collection from district education offices today, showed most students had performed dismally in Mathematics and Science subjects.

“There is a noticeable decrease in the number of candidates who have obtained a first class pass and second class pass in 2010 as compared to 2009,” Khaketla said.

“The decrease in the number of candidates obtaining first and second class can be attributed to low performance in both Mathematics and Science.”

Khaketla said 5 954 students had obtained a first class pass. The figure was a 1.9 percent drop from last year’s 6 664 students.

The minister said 9 877 students obtained a second class pass, a decrease of 2.4 percent from last year’s figure.

She said 20 803 students had obtained a third class pass which was an increase of 5.8 percent from last year’s total.

Khaketla said 5 235 students had failed to satisfy the minimum requirements for the award of Primary School Leaving Certificate.

The overall pass rate was put at 87.5 percent, an increase of 1.5 percent from the previous year’s figure.

The minister said the Standard Seven results can also be accessed through short phone messages (SMS — Econet Telecom 65 123 or Vodacom 54 222).

Students can also access the results on the following website: www.education.gov.ls or www.lesotho.gov.ls
