Lifefo get another chance

MASERU — The A Division Buddie Top 8 draw might be affected by the result of a replay between Lifefo and Maduma.

The draw, involving the top four teams from the Buddie A Division’s North and South streams, was held at the Bambatha Tsíta Sports Arena on Sunday.

Both Lifefo and Maduma were not in the hat for the draw.

But Lifefo could find themselves automatically in the tournament if they win their replay against Maduma on Saturday.

The replay will be at a neutral venue in Hlotse, about 75km north of Maseru.

If they win, Lifefo will displace Berea LMPS from fourth place in the North Stream standings.

This means Berea LMPS would have to give up the Top 8 berth they had taken.

Berea LMPS had been drawn to play South Stream champions Bantu.

The A Division Management Committee (Admaco) has ordered that Lifefo and Maduma replay their league match which was abandoned before the end.

The match was played on March 29 at Khukhune in Butha-Buthe, about 120km north of Maseru.

Lifefo protested against Maduma’s use of an unregistered player, Remaketse Qobela.

At haltime, Lifefo officials tried to photograph Qobela but were foiled by their Maduma counterparts.

This incensed Lifefo fans who started hurling abuse at the match official in the second half.

The referee, probably fearing that the situation could get out of hand, prematurely ended the match.

The Lesotho Times could not establish at what time the match was stopped.

Maduma were leading 2-0 when the match was abandoned.

Lifefo are sixth on the North Stream standings with 24 points, two less than fourth-placed Berea LMPS.

The abandoned match had not been factored in pending the league committee’s decision.

However, the result of the replay will be academic to Maduma, who are second from bottom.

Admaco public relations officer Mosebo Motsoasele confirmed that the Top 8 draw could be affected because of the replay.

“The Saturday match outcome between Lifefo and Maduma might affect Top 8 draw if Lifefo wins that game,” Motsoasele said.

He said his committee had to go ahead with the draw regardless of the pending case because Sunday was the “only available date for the draw”.

The draw pitted Bantu against Berea LMPS and Qalo versus Sefothafotha.

The two matches will be played on April 18 in Mohale’s Hoek.

The following day at the same venue, North Stream champions Nyenye Rovers will take on Arsenal, while Mabeoana entertain Butha-Buthe Fast XI.

The winners will meet in the four-team finals scheduled for May 2 and 3 in Mokhotlong.
